Hello! I’m Anthony Burt and I’m a writer. Welcome.
I’ve been an experienced youth worker for 17 years, helping and inspiring children and young people with behavioural difficulties to find jobs and enjoy life. I’ve also worked in marketing, film, PR, journalism, retail and tour guiding.
Recently, however, I’ve focused more on my children’s writing and TV scriptwriting. This has involved writing several pilots for CiTV, scripts for Doctor Who comics, specialist reading and judging for high-profile, professional writing competitions such as the Bath Novel Award, and writing/editing children’s fantasy books.
I’ve travelled a lot and worked in brilliant places such as the Redwood Forest in northern California, in the film industry in Los Angeles, in Bath at the Jane Austen Centre, as a bookseller, a press officer for the police, a teacher in Portsmouth and a staff storytelling trainer for the Roald Dahl Museum in Buckinghamshire, London Zoo and The Writers’ Store in California.
I originally come from Weymouth, Dorset, but now live in Bideford, Devon with my girlfriend Amy. I write in a small office in our little house overlooking the stunning estuary at the mouth of the River Torridge.
I have a very bad habit of needing a cup of tea and, at least, three custard cream biscuits to be able to start writing…but then, everyone knows biscuits have magical powers that unlock creativity, right?
I’ve written commissioned books, scripts and articles for Nickelodeon, Disney, Harpercollins, Macmillan, Dreamworks, BBC, Guardian, The Wrap, Haymarket Publishing (Children & Young People Now), Parragon, Paramount, CiTV and have trained professional scriptwriters in Los Angeles on how to write for children.
Since I was given a Fisher Price toy typewriter for Christmas when I was 5-years-old, I’ve loved writing stories. At the moment, I’m working on an exciting, moving and adventure-filled young adult coming-of-age book about pirates, growing up, love, loss and overcoming evil.
